Comparison

Oran vs hiring a CRO agency

By Eren Menteşe, founder of Oran Last updated

Short answer

Agency pricing guides put a CRO agency retainer at about $2,000 to $15,000 a month. Oran costs $99 to $599 a month. The agency does the work: research, design, development and A/B tests. Oran does not; it finds the funnel gaps that cost your store the most, puts a monthly dollar figure on each and checks whether a fix worked. For a smaller store, start with Oran, fix the top leaks yourself and add an agency when your traffic and budget can support a testing program.

The agency prices below come from agency and vendor guides, accessed October 31, 2026. Treat them as rough, because quotes vary by agency and scope.

What CRO agencies typically charge

Pricing guides agree on the shape of the market, not on one number. Clicks Geek, a US marketing agency for local service businesses, splits 2026 retainers into three tiers.

CRO agency retainer tiers, 2026
TierPer monthMonthly visitorsWhat it covers
Entry$2,000 to $5,000About 20,000 to 100,000Basic A/B tests on key pages, 2 to 4 tests a month, monthly reporting
Mid-tier$5,000 to $15,000About 100,000 to 500,000Recordings, surveys and heatmaps, multi-page funnel tests, a dedicated strategist, 6 to 10 tests a month
Enterprise$15,000 to $50,000+500,000+A team of strategists, researchers, designers and developers

Source: Clicks Geek, CRO agency retainer costs, published April 14, 2026, updated October 21, 2026, accessed October 31, 2026.

fibr.ai, an AI CRO platform, gives a similar range: $2,000 to $15,000 a month for ongoing work, $100 to $300 an hour and $5,000 to $50,000 per project. Clicks Geek puts a one-off conversion audit at $5,000 to $25,000.

Two costs are easy to miss. First, tools: Clicks Geek says enterprise testing platforms such as Optimizely or VWO can run $2,000 to $10,000+ a month, depending on traffic, and some retainers include them while others do not. Second, contract terms: minimum commitments typically run three to six months, with a 30-day notice period.

What an agency gives you that Oran does not

This is real work, and Oran does none of it. Oran works from numbers; a strategist can also weigh brand, offers and stock.

  • Research. Someone watches recordings, runs surveys and turns what they find into test ideas.
  • Design and copy. A designer and a writer make the new version.
  • Development. A developer builds the change and ships it to your store.
  • A testing program. Tests are set up, run on your live site and called by a strategist who owns the roadmap.

What Oran gives you

Oran works from aggregate funnel counts and revenue totals, so there is nothing to install on your store. Setup takes about 10 minutes.

  • Gaps against the typical store. Each funnel step is compared with published Shopify medians, by device and category.
  • A dollar value per leak. A gap is listed as a leak only when your own data shows it is not noise. Leaks are ranked by impact, confidence and effort.
  • About 30 UX checks. Examples: shipping and tax shown before checkout, guest checkout, Apple Pay and Shop Pay.
  • Proof. Each fix gets a measurement plan and a significance test. Only significant lifts are booked as verified gains.
  • Handoff material. On Growth and Scale, Oran drafts copy, a design brief and a developer ticket for a fix.
What Oran does not do Oran does not design, write code, run an A/B test on your live site or ship fixes. Today you type in about 30 days of funnel counts from GA4 or Shopify Analytics, or paste a CSV. Live GA4 and platform connections are not available yet. Benchmarks are Littledata's published Shopify medians, not Oran data. A before/after check is not an A/B test: promotions and seasons can move the numbers too.

Can your store run a test at all?

A testing program needs traffic. How much depends on the rate you test and the lift you want to detect. Shopify's A/B testing guide suggests more than 5,000 visitors to a given page and tests that run for two full business cycles, usually two to four weeks. Clicks Geek says at least 10,000 monthly visitors. These are rules of thumb. The math is stricter for a whole-store test.

Sessions needed per variant to detect a lift, at 95% confidence and 80% power
Rate testedShopify median10% relative lift20% relative lift
Order conversion (sessions to purchase)1.4%about 116,000about 30,400
Add to cart (sessions to cart)6.8%about 22,500about 5,900
Checkout completion (checkouts started to purchase)49%about 1,630about 400

Medians: Littledata, 436 Shopify stores, GA4 data for July 27 to October 24, 2026, accessed October 31, 2026. Sample sizes are our own calculation. The last row counts checkout sessions, not all sessions.

At 30,000 sessions a month, a two-variant test for a 10% lift in order conversion needs about 232,000 sessions, which is roughly 7.7 months. The same test on add to cart needs about 45,000 sessions, roughly 1.5 months. A test on add to cart ends sooner, but it measures a step, not revenue.

Some sources count conversions instead of visitors. Shopify's guide quotes Ton Wesseling of Online Dialogue, who puts the line for validating findings with A/B tests at about 1,000 conversions a month. Improvado says full A/B testing programs fail below that level for lack of statistical power.

Method Sessions per variant = (1.96 + 0.84)² × (p1(1 − p1) + p2(1 − p2)) ÷ (p2 − p1)², where p1 is the baseline rate and p2 is p1 times (1 + lift). Figures are rounded. When an A/B test would run past 28 days, Oran's plan switches to a before/after measurement.

Which one fits your store?

The bands below are our suggestion. Sources disagree on thresholds. Clicks Geek places entry retainers at about 20,000 to 100,000 monthly visitors. Improvado, a marketing-data vendor, places agencies at 20,000 to 200,000 and tool-based approaches below about 20,000.

Using both

Agencies and Oran fit together. An agency can run a client's funnel through Oran to choose the first sprint, hand the developer ticket and design brief to the team, then show the client a significance-checked result.

Questions to ask any agency

These come from the green and red flags in the Clicks Geek guide. They work for any agency.

  • What will you test each month, and who decides?
  • Who owns the test data and the learnings?
  • Are testing tools in the retainer, or on top?
  • How do you decide a test has a winner?
  • What is the notice period?
  • Do you promise a specific lift? Clicks Geek says to walk away from any agency that does.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a CRO agency cost?
Agency pricing guides put ongoing CRO retainers at roughly $2,000 to $15,000 a month, and $15,000 to $50,000 or more for large programs (fibr.ai; Clicks Geek, 2026). Audits are often quoted at $5,000 to $25,000. These sources are written by agencies and vendors, and testing tools may cost extra, so treat the figures as rough.
Does Oran replace a CRO agency?
No. Oran does not do research, design, development or A/B tests on your site. It compares your funnel with published Shopify benchmarks, prices each gap in dollars per month, ranks the fixes and checks whether a fix worked. Your team or an agency still makes the changes.
How much does Oran cost compared with an agency?
Oran costs $99 (Starter), $199 (Growth) or $599 (Scale) a month, and yearly billing gives two months free. Every plan starts with a 14-day Growth trial and no credit card is required. An agency retainer pays for hands-on work, which Oran does not do.
How much traffic does an A/B testing program need?
There is no single number. It depends on the baseline rate and the lift you want to detect. At the 1.4% Shopify median conversion rate (Littledata, October 2026), detecting a 10% relative lift in order conversion takes about 116,000 sessions per variant. A step with a higher rate, such as checkout completion, needs far fewer. Oran's experiment calculator (Growth and Scale) shows the sample size and days for your own numbers.
Can an agency use Oran with its clients?
Yes. An agency can use Oran to pick the first fixes and to show a client whether a fix worked. The Scale plan covers up to 10 stores. Data goes in by hand or as a CSV for now, because live GA4 and platform connections are not available yet. Agencies can email eren@useoran.com.
